Due Dates: And Why They’re Really Just “Guess Dates”

If your phone is buzzing non-stop with "baby yet?" texts, you're not alone. That daily ping of anticipation from well-meaning friends and family can become overwhelming, especially as your "due date" approaches—or passes.

The Truth About Due Dates

Let's first clear something up: due dates are more accurately called guess dates. Only about 4% of babies actually arrive on their predicted due date. Yes, you read that right—just 4%!

That magical date circled on your calendar is simply an estimate based on a 40-week average pregnancy. In reality, healthy, full-term babies can safely arrive anywhere between 37 and 42 weeks. Your body and your baby are working together on perfect timing, and that timing is unique to your pregnancy.

The Mental Pressure of the Countdown

The psychological impact of a looming due date can be significant. As the date approaches (or passes), many moms report feeling anxious, frustrated, or even like their body is somehow failing them. This added stress is the last thing you need when preparing for birth.

Here's a practical tip: Consider adding two weeks to your given due date when sharing with friends and family. Or better yet, just mention the month rather than a specific date. This simple strategy can save you from the daily "baby yet??" texts and relieve some of the mental pressure as you wait.

The Beauty in Waiting

Each additional day your baby spends in the womb provides valuable development time. Your little one is still:

  • Developing lung function

  • Building brain connections

  • Storing important nutrients

  • Strengthening their immune system

Meanwhile, your body is continuing its own perfect preparation for labor and delivery. Nature has an incredible way of knowing just when the time is right.

Supporting Yourself During the Waiting Game

If you're currently in those final days or weeks of pregnancy, here are some gentle reminders:

Take time for yourself. This might be your last opportunity for some uninterrupted self-care for a while. Enjoy it!

Rest when possible. We know sleep isn't always easy at this stage, but find comfortable positions and grab those naps when you can or spend some extra time in quiet reflection.

Keep moving gently. Walking, swimming, prenatal yoga, or gentle stretching can all help encourage optimal baby positioning and prepare your body for labor.

Practice relaxation techniques. The breathing and mindfulness exercises you practice now will serve you well during labor and beyond. Grab a blank notebook and start journaling all your thoughts, feelings, fears, expectations to get them out of your head.

Consider prenatal chiropractic care. Many of our expecting moms report feeling immediate relief after their adjustments, making these final days more comfortable and supporting proper pelvic function so baby can get in the most optimal position for birth.

But, remember

Your baby will come when they're ready. Your body is intelligent and knows what it's doing. Trust the process and remember that this waiting—though challenging—is temporary. Soon enough, those "baby yet?" texts will transform into congratulations, and this period of anticipation will become just another chapter in your beautiful birth story.

We're here to support you before, during, and after this momentous transition. You've got this, mama!
